Automobile registrations are valid for one year.
New Registration: When a car is purchased, whether through a dealership or private sale, the Castine Town Office can process and issue plates unless a vanity plate is desired. You will need:
- Vehicle information (year, make, model, VIN number)
- A signed title if the vehicle is 1995 or newer or a Title Application (light blue) from a dealership
- A bill of sale or previous registration form
- Proof of insurance
- Current mileage
- Fee for excise tax and applicable registration fees. The Town accepts cash, checks or credit/debits cards (subject to a 2.5% merchant fee).
Renewal Registration: Proof of insurance, current mileage, and payment of excise tax and fees is required.
Vanity Plates: If you wish to have vanity plates on your vehicle, you will have to FIRST come to the Castine Town Office to pay excise tax. You will be issued an excise tax receipt which you would then submit to a State of Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles Branch (locations in Bangor and Ellsworth) to complete the transaction.
