Maine Coast Heritage Trust is offering Castine residents the option of cutting a Christmas tree in Witherle Woods Preserve between November 24 and Christmas day.
The entire preserve is available for the removal of a Balsam Fir tree; only harvesting for non-commercial use is allowed, and we request that only one tree be taken per
household. Anyone who wishes to cut a tree in the preserve is asked to follow these guidelines:
• Please access the preserve via the Battle Ave entrances
• Permission is specific to Balsam Fir trees (see below)
• Only non-powered handsaws may be used
• Please cut the tree as close to the ground as reasonably possible
• Tipping Balsam Fir trees for wreathes is allowed
• Please do not cut large trees and just remove the top
Balsam Fir is probably best identified by examining the needles towards the tip of a lower limb. Branches not in full sun tend to have a somewhat flattened appearance
with needles spread out at right angles from the branch.
